Joseph Elliot Girardi was selected by the Cubs in the fifth round of the 1986 June draft ... led Midwest League catchers with .309 batting average, 1986 ... led Carolina League catchers in total chances, 1987 ... led Eastern League catchers in fielding percentage and total chances, 1988 ... in 1989, became first rookie catcher to start for the Cubs on Opening Day since Randy Hundley in 1966 ... had six hits in first 12 Major League at-bats ... missed most of 1991 season with lower back strain and a broken nose ... missed much of 1992 with broken hand ... selected by Colorado in Expansion Draft, 1992 ... fought hand injuries again in 1993, but posted .290 average ... led Rockies with 12 sacrifice bunts, 1995 ... traded to Yankees November 20, 1995 ... set career high with .294 average and ranked third in American League with .996 fielding percentage, 1996 ... earned degree in Industrial Engineering from Northwestern University in 1986..
